SALTILLO, Coahuila, July 23, 2008.- The
Dominican National Team virtually secured
the first place of Pool A by defeating
Canada, one of the favorites 3-1 in the
second day of action of the NORCECA
Women’s Junior Tournament, a qualifier to
the 2009 World Championship.
Following a tough battle in the opening,
won by the North Americans 29-27, the
Dominicans recovered and were the owners
of the scenario with good defense and
accurate shots from the corners winning
the next three 25-16, 25-15, 25-17.
In the third set they took a 9-2 lead, and
increased to 15-5, and while the Canadians
tried to stop the consistent offense of
their opponents, the Dominicans never
stopped lead by Jeoselyna Rodríguez (14)
and Yenifer Calcano and Lisvel Eve, who
each contributed 13 points.
For the Canadians, the top scorer and the
only one in double figures was the captain
Sofie Schalagintweit (13).
This is the second straight victory for
the pupils of Cuban Larrazaleta who
yesterday took United States out of their
way, one of the teams with better options
for the medals.
Enrique Larrazaleta, coach of Dominican
Republic: ”This is the Canada I know, a
strong team and with great blocking,
because of that we designed the plan of
receiving as best as posible and thus to
move the opponent’s blocking because they
have tall women and you have to do that
against that big wall, I congratulate them
because they have a great team.”
Normand Bouchard, coach of Canada: “The
match between them was fun, the Dominicans
hit the ball very hard, their defense was
everywhere, while our ups and downs
created our problems.”
Niverka Marte, captain of Dominican
Republic: “The match was very good, Canada
was different than yesterday, today they
showed very strong, but we know that
winning today would make tomorrow’s match
more easier for taking the first place of
the pool and we played focused on that,
and both teams played very well.”
Sofie Schlagintweit, captain of Canada:
“It was a great match, our rivals went out
very strong and we could not follow their
steps.” |
